Communication education in Xi'an Jiaotong University originated in 2000. After the independent establishment of the School of Journalism and New Media in 2019, according to the unified deployment of the school, the new Department of Communication was officially established on April 29, 2020. The Department of Communication has a reasonable and vibrant academic team, and it is also a department with a large scale and a large number of faculty and staff. The department has 15 teachers, including 3 professors who are also doctoral supervisors, 7 associate professors, and 5 lecturers. Among them, one person in the new century outstanding talent plan of the Ministry of Education, one from the Ministry of Education, one leader in philosophy and social sciences in Shaanxi Province, one young talent in Shaanxi Province, and two experts from the National Social Science Fund review. The "New Media and Social Governance Research Center" relying on the construction of the Department of Communication is the first batch of new think tanks (Class A) in universities in Shaanxi Province. In the past five years, more than 100 projects were granted, such as the National Social Science Fund project, the National Social Science Fund project, and projects from the Ministry of Education, the National Civil Committee, the Ministry of Culture, and the Shaanxi Provincial Social Science Fund. There are currently three teaching and research teams in the Department of Communication, focusing on new media communication and social development, cultural soft power and international communication, governmental new media and media convergence. We strive to build an academic highland with distinctive western characteristics and serving national strategic needs.

Three major scientific research teams
I. Research Direction 1: New Media Communication and Social Development, Team Leader: YANG Lin, Email: llzyl-007@163.com
It mainly studies the modernization and governance with the characteristics of China's western region, focusing on the problems of rural revitalization, national integration, and health communication, focusing on exploring the coupling relationship between the characteristics of China's western region and modernization, and discussing the special path of modernization in the China’s western region. Professor YANG Lin, the leader of the team, has obtained 1 major project from National Social Science Fund, 2 general projects from National Social Science Fund, more than 10 provincial and ministerial projects, and more than 30 important commissioned projects. The development momentum is promising.
II. Research Direction 2: Cultural Soft Power and International Communication, Team Leader: WU Feng, Email: wufeng8@xjtu.edu.cn
It mainly studies major issues in the field of national cultural soft power and international communication, starting from the dimensions of historical experience and practical needs, focusing on the major issues in the development history of the Communist Party of China's cultural undertakings, the history of the Communist Party of China's international communication, the development of cultural undertakings and cultural industries in the new era, and the field of international communication, we will explore the strategy for building national cultural soft power in the new era and new paths for international communication.
The team leader, Professor WU Feng, has won 2 National Social Science Funds and 2 Humanities and Social Science Projects of the Ministry of Education. More than 10 ministerial-level projects such as from the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and former State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television are granted. More than 50 projects entrusted by party committees and governments in various places, and more than 20 entrusted projects such as 14th Five-Year Cultural Industry Development Plan from publicity department of local governments, these projects received positive feedback and laid the foundation for the team development.
III. Research Direction 3: New Media and National Governance, Team Leader: CHEN Qiang, Email: hustcq@163.com
The team conducts research by facing major national and local needs such as media integration development and digital government construction, it focuses on major issues in government new media and media convergence, focusing on government new media communication and social governance, the integration and development of traditional media and emerging media, and the integration of county-level media and media integration. The team leader, Professor CHEN Qiang, has won 1 National Social Science Fund, more than 10 provincial and ministerial and other projects, and has formed distinctive features in international publication, think tank results and social services.
