The cultivation of Journalism talents in Xi’an Jiaotong University has been started since 2004. With more than ten years of continuous development of research and education, the Department of Journalism was officially established on April 29, 2020. Department of Journalism has focused on providing multidisciplinary, theoretically innovative and practically relevant knowledge, aiming to cultivate multifaceted professionals who will play an essential role in the media industry, government agencies, research institutes and universities. Core courses the department offers include: Studies of Journalism, New media & Social Governance, Studies of Public Opinion on the Internet, International Communication, Crisis Communication, etc. Relying on the multi-disciplinary comprehensive curriculum, graduates will be equipped with advanced techniques, global horizon, creative design and critical thinking, which is respond to the needs in the era of artificial intelligence and big data.
1. Faculty
The faculty member of Department of Journalism features in aspects of interdependence of theory and practice and integration of Industry-Education-Research. As of June 2022, the department has 13 full-time faculty members, including 2 professors, 3 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, and 4 lecturers. 11 of them hold a Ph.D. degree from first-rank universities in China, 4 of them have media or related industry experiences, 3 of them have experiences or scholars with one or more years of experiences in abroad universities, 2 of them owns the qualification of doctoral supervisor. Among the faculty, one faculty member was awarded the special allowance of the State Council, the winner of the National Baogang Education Award, the leader of Sanqin Innovative Group, and one was awarded the Leading Talents of the National Special Support Program for High-level Talents and the National Cultural Masters and "Four Batches" Talents, and there is one member of the Professional Qualification Examination Expert Group for Publishing Professionals. Besides, several faculty members play an advisory role in government policy-making and company operation.
2. Research Direction and research groups
Department of Journalism has created a network of corporate studies covering main issues of journalism and public opinion, risk management of new media communication, national image and brand communication. The department has carried out several national level and provincial level research projects, wining awards from Shaanxi Provincial Government, Ministry of Education and National Bureaus. In corporation with the Provincial Network & Information Office, Shaanxi Provincial Federation of Social Sciences, and media agency like People’s Daily, Department of Journalism conducts research programs, provides training for journalists, communication professionals, publicity officials and related government employees.
1. Group 1: Journalism and Risk Governance of Information, Group Leader: Professor LI Mingde, E-mail: lmd@xjtu.edu.cn
This group examines the significant issues of the journalism and the leading of public opinion, media and the ideological communication, online public opinion and the risk governance of information, editing & publishing and education of journalism and communication. Based on the previous achievements of journal articles, books and research projects in the above fields, this group intends to expand the field of research to identification of political positions and inducements for social media content, cognitive communication and online public opinion under the big data and artificial intelligence.
Professor LI Mingde, the leader of this group, has taken charge of 1 major project of Humanities and Social Science Project of the Ministry of Education(No. 18JZD022), 1 major project and 1 normal project of National Social Science Funds(No.12AZD009, No.14BXW052), 1 project of New Liberal Arts Research and Reform Practice Project from the Ministry of Education(No. 2021050081), and more than 30 projects hold by provincial and ministerial bureaus. These projects has received positive feedback both in academia and society, which has laid a solid foundation for the group development. Professor Li has published 13 textbooks and monographs, and has published more than 140 high-level journal articles, four of these has been reprinted by the authoritative journals namely Xinhua Digest and Renda journal database.
2. Group 2: The Communist Party of China's Views on News and Public Opinion, Group Leader: Professor MA Zhong, E-mail: mazhong2018@xjtu.edu.cn
This group examines the historical process, internal logic and realistic path of Chinese Communist Party's views on news and public opinion, focusing on the Chinese experience and future model of Marxist view of journalism. By analyzing major issues in above fields, this group aims to promote innovative breakthroughs in the discipline system, academic system and discourse system by high interdisciplinary research.
Professor MA Zhong, the leader of this group, has been selected for Xi'an Jiaotong University Young Top-notch Talent Support Program, the Leading Talents of the National Special Support Program for High-level Talents and the National Cultural Masters and "Four Batches" Talents. He has taken charge of 2 projects sponsored by National Social and Science Funds(No.20VYJ019, No.14XKS031), 1 sub-topics of the major project of National Social and Science Funds(No.20@ZH025), and other 10 projects sponsored by provincial and ministerial bureaus. Within his own research area, he has published 4 monographs and more than 80 high-level journal articles, many of which have been reprinted in full text by the Renda journal database. He was awarded the first prize of provincial teaching achievement award, social science achievement award, school-level outstanding teaching achievement award and many other honors.
